Where & What is the Middle East Today?


The word “ Middle East ” has been widely used lately, by the press, in books and even by common people, sometimes to describe a place, other times to describe certain people who live there. Others may use it to describe the other side of the globe.

Let's have a quick overview on what is the Middle East, where is it and learn some interesting facts about it.

Where is the Middle East ?

Historians say that history waits upon geography. Before having a play, there must be a stage.

The Middle East is the natural crossroads of the Afro-Eurasian landmass, it is also the “land of the seven seas”. It lies athwart the water route from southern Ukraine to the Mediterranean, via the Black Sea .

Who are the people living there?

The Middle East geography has contributed to the diversity of its inhabitants.

Mountains, river valleys and deserts have created different lifestyles. On the other hand, different invasions have brought new races and folkways into the Middle East . The result is a vast mosaic of peoples, a living museum of physical types, belief systems, languages and cultures.

The religion of nine-tenths of the people there, is Islam. Half the population of the area speaks Arabic, most of the other half speaks either Turkish or Persian.

How is Nature like over there?

The Middle East tends to be hot and dry. Most parts get some rainfall, but usually in amounts too small to support settled agriculture. The lands are rich in natural resources, metals and minerals, such as oil, coal, gold, …. etc
