Pearls of Wisdom

Wise Words by Great Intellects

Questions such as why human beings were created, and why certain events occur as opposed to others, and why someone had to die and not another, can not be answered by the human mind in and of itself. A simple reason is the fact that human beings are not even able to uncover the mysteries of their own brain! The human mind is only able to identify existing rules, which Allah has put in nature, and use them to come up with new connections. That is why Allah,

the One and Only Perfect Creator of the universe, has sent messengers, Prophets (peace be upon them all) since the beginning of time, from among the best of human beings, to guide human beings…

Light of the Cave

Your week is dark without it!

‘Surat Al-Kahf' or the Cave Chapter, located almost in the middle of the Quran, has been frequently mentioned in Hadith by Prophet Mohammad PBUH. He has recommended it for a weekly recitation. Why? As mentioned in the Hadith “He who reads Surat Al-Kahf on Fridays is granted light between the 2 Fridays” But what is meant by light in this Hadith?

This miraculous chapter summarizes four major seditions human beings encounter in their everyday life:

•  religion,

•  money,

•  science and knowledge, and

•  authority and influence

Four renowned Quranic Stories narrated in the beautiful educational manner of the Quran. Each story conceptualizes sedition. The reward of defeating the sedition is demonstrated at the end of each story followed by the lesson.

The Cave People – Religion Sedition

The Story

They are a group of religious youth living in an infidel city ruled by a tyrant king. An encounter happened between this group and their people; a fact which threatened their life and living. Their options were limited: either bend to the wind by going with the stream, or escape with their religion to save their life and faith. They went for the second choice and headed to a cave where they fell asleep for around 309 years.

The Reward

During these years, they were guarded by Allah SWT; waking up, the status of their city has totally changed. Their city has become religious. Allah SWT has made of them an example to humanity; an example that we still, and will go on, referring to.

The Lesson

‘[But,] behold, as for those who attain to faith and do righteous deeds-verily, We do not fail to requite any who persevere in doing good: theirs shall be gardens of perpetual bliss - [gardens] through which running waters flow - wherein they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and will wear green garments of silk and brocade, [and] wherein upon couches they will recline:" how excellent a recompense, and how goodly a place to rest!' [18:30-31]

The Owner of Wealth – Money Sedition

The Story

A man has been granted wealth and he totally forgot the fact that Allah SWT is the reason for it. So, he acted arrogantly with his surroundings.

The Reward

He lost all of his wealth.

The Lesson

‘AND PROPOUND unto them the parable of the life of this world: [it is] like the water which We send down from the skies, and which is absorbed by the plants of the earth: but [in time] they turn into dry stubble which the winds blow freely about. And it is God [alone] who determines all things.' [18:45]

Al Khoder & Moses (PBUT) – Knowledge Sedition

The Story

Moses PBUH heard of a man who has knowledge beyond his, though he is a prophet. He travelled distances to meet this man hoping he would learn from him. Meeting him, Al Khoder PBUH welcomed him but warned him ‘[The other] answered: "Behold, thou wilt never be able to have patience with me – for how couldst thou be patient about something that thou canst not comprehend within the compass of (thy] experience?' [18:67-68]

He has taken him through three situations; situations are difficult to stand and they challenge the patience of Prophet Moses: making a hole in the boat, killing a boy and building a wall.

The Reward

‘[The sage] replied: "This is the parting of ways between me and thee. [And now] I shall let thee know the real meaning of all [those events] that thou wert unable to bear with patience.'[18:78]

The Lesson

This story is a reminder of an advice which has always been given by Imam Al Shaarawy, May Allah have Mercy on Him. He always said, ‘whenever you find yourself facing trouble and you cannot really understand why this is happening to you, remember the 3 'as for' stories.'

The idea here is that you cannot judge the action except in light of understanding the reason behind it or knowing its doer intention. This is the nature of human beings, patience is challenging because they do not comprehend reasoning behind everything happening around.

Life is full of tests; so patience is key. Patience requires that you either comprehend the full picture, which only Allah SWT is capable of or to link the tests to their doers. If this test is coming from Allah SWT, who created you, loves you and for sure wants the best for you, then you will believe it is for good, and eventually be patient. Love whatever comes from Allah SWT; it is for your own good, even if you do not understand.

Two Horned One (Zo'lQarnayn) – Power Sedition

The Story

A powerful knowledgeable king went around the world spreading good and helping people. He encouraged people to do their duty in life and utilize their skills in overcoming their problems ‘and so he chose the right means [in whatever he did].'[18:85]

The Reward

His reward was enabling him to build the dam that blocked the way for Gog and Magog by utilizing the energy of a group of ignorant people.

The Lesson

‘Shall we tell you who the greatest losers in whatever they may do are? [It is] they whose labour has gone astray in [the pursuit of no more than] this world's life, and who none the less think that they are doing good works: it is they who have chosen to deny their Sustainer's messages and the truth; that they are deseined to meet Him." Hence, all their [good] deeds come to nought, and no weight shall We assign to them on Resurrection Day.'[18:103-105]

The Light

‘Surat Al-Kahf' is full of lights. The lights are coming in the form of alarms of seditions. The insights in this chapter grow more urgent with the temptations we face in our everyday life. The stories reflect on incidents we frequently encounter. Hence, reading this chapter thoroughly at least once weekly is essential; these lessons should remain engraved in our minds and hearts.
